Scottish Ganesh Festival

पहिली पायरी...

एप्रिल २०१६, एडिनबरातल्या मुलींच्या गृपने संक्रांती साजरी करायचं ठरवलं. स्थळ अर्थातच हिंदू मंदिर. त्या निमित्ताने जवळपास ३० मराठी कुटुंब एकत्र आली आणि ओळख गप्पा गोष्टी सुरु झाल्या. निरोप घेण्यापुर्वी पुन्हा सर्वांनी एकत्र भेटायचं नक्की करुन फोननंबर ची देवाण घेवाण केली आणि पुढच्याच आठवड्यात कुणाल ने वॉट्सॅप गृप तयार केला.

सुरुवातीला गृपवर जोक्स आणि फॉर्वर्ड सुरु असतांना सगळे मिळून काय करता येईल अशी चर्चा सुरु झाली आणि इतकी मराठी मंडळी असतांना किमान दिड दिवसांचा का होईना पण गणेशोत्सव व्हायला पाहिजे असं सर्वमत झालं. डॉ सचणेंनी पुढाकार घेत या विषयावर चर्चा करायला सर्वांना मंदिरात बोलावलं. साधारण १२-१५ लोकं जमली. गणेशोत्सव झाला पाहिजे या बाबतही कोणाचं दुमत नव्हतं पण पुढाकार घ्यायला, वेळ द्यायला लोकांची अनुत्सुकता होती.

कसं करायचं ? होईल का? जमेल का? खर्च किती होईल? पैसे कसे जमतील ? खुप काथ्याकुट झाला.

मात्र या संकल्पनेला ७ जणांनी निःसंशय पाठींबा दिला आणि बाप्पांचा उत्सव करायचाच असे ठरवले.

मे २०१६ च्या साधारण दुसर्‍या आठवड्यात या सातजणांनी, म्हणजे डॉ किरण सचणे, जितेंन्द्र पाटील, डॉ निलेश कणसे, आनंद बोडस, कुणाल प्रधान, उमेश धामणसकर आणि सागर पाबळे, यांनी पुढच्या नियोजनासंदर्भात भेटायचं ठरवलं. स्थळ लिथ वॉक इथला The Foot of The Walk कॅफे.

फक्त अर्धातास भेटायचं ठरलं असतांना आम्ही जवळपास ३ तास तपशिलवार चर्चा केली.

गणपती कुठे बसवायचा, त्यासाठी लागणार्‍या परवानग्या. मंदिराची ना हरकत मिळवणे. स्थापना व विसर्जन. आरती च्या वेळा, मुर्ती कुठुन आणि कशी आणायची. डेकोरेशन प्रसादाची सोय.. सगळे विषय बोलून झाले व त्यासंदर्भात प्रत्येकाने जबाबदारी वाटुन घेतली.

इतकं सगळं मुख्य गृपवर चर्चा करणं कठीण होतं... प्रत्येक गोष्टीत खुप सकारात्मक किंवा नकारात्मक सल्ले येत होते पण मदतीचे हात मात्र येत नव्हते. इतक्या दुर गणपती उत्सव होऊ शकतो यावर कोणी विश्वास ठेवायलाच तयार नव्हतं.

मग अनाहूत सल्ले टाळण्यासाठी एक वेगळा ७ जणांचा Organizing Committee गृप बनवला.

प्रसंगी सातही जणांनी खिशातून १०० पाउंड टाकून किमान सातशे मधे का होईना पण उत्सव करायचाच असं ठरवलं..

There is always a time and place for everything and good things happen to those who wait...

It did not began a long long time ago... but still got etched in history. It was the month of April in the year 2016, a group of marathi girls in Edinburgh decided to celebrate Makar sankranti a hindu festival to mark the start of harvesting season in India. The Edinburgh Hindu Mandir was the chosen venue. This was attended by 30 Marathi families and each one got introducing each other. The subsequent chats and getting to know each other placed the foundation stone to plan something better and bigger. Phone numbers were exchanged and Kunal Pradhan led the way with starting a Whatsapp group bringing togetehr the Maharashtrian people.

Initially, when the group started jokes and forwards were floating around. Then began the discussion to plan and bring the community together irrespective of caste or religious lines. This gave birth to the idea of celebrating one and a half day of Lord Ganesha. Dr. Kiran Sachane invited everyone in the temple to discuss and plan this event. About 12-15 enthusiasts gathered. All agreed to plan and celebrate Ganeshotsav, but time was of essence and the questions lingered in everyones mind

"Can we give enough time?" How to do? Can we do it ? Why? How much will it cost? How do you get the money?

It was a battle half won. There was an idea but the plan had to be worked out to make the event a success. Seven people assured support for this idea and decided to welcome and celebrate our beloved - 'Bappa'.

In the second half of May 2016, these seven people Dr. Kiran Sachane, Jitendra Patil, Dr. Nilesh Kanase, Anand Bodas, Kunal Pradhan, Umesh Dhammanskar and Sagar Pabale decided to meet to plan the next steps. The Foot of The Walk Café on Leith Walk was agreed as the meeting spot. The meeting planned for an hour went on for about 3 hours discussing the plan in detail. Ideas were brainstormed on process to apply permissions for Ganpati, temple premise usage, establishment and immersion for the Bappa's idol, aarti and puja timings, place to procure the idol from, decoration, naivaidya and prasad options etc.

All the topics that formed a part of the traditional and cultural celebration of the festival were discussed and all suggestions were appreciated. It was difficult to discuss so much on all the main groups ... There were very positive or negative remedies in everything, but there was no help. Nobody was ready to believe that Ganesha celebrations can happen. Then, to prevent unauthorized counsels, a separate 7 people group was formed. At the time, seven people decided to contribute £100 initially and lead the way. These 7 people then formed the 'Organising Committee' and then the rest is history...
